How to Find the Style of Wedding Photography You Like
Congrats to all the engaged couples out there!
Today, we’re talking about “Style.”
In my consults with my couples this weekend, several said "this is my first time hiring a photographer; I'm not sure what to look for or ask." Realizing that many people out there haven't hired for a photographer before, and really don't know what to look for, I figured I'd share some quick tips on Style.
The intent of this isn't to put photographers in a box; moreso to help YOU as an engaged bride better understand what's out there, stylistically, to help you in shaping your preferences..
Here are a few areas you may want to see whether your photographer favors.....
Light & Airy vs. Dark & Moody shooting/editing style
Classic/traditional posing vs. Modern/more candid style
Filmic editing style vs Digital editing style
Real Vibrant colors vs. Muted/Desaturated toned colors
Natural light look vs. more use of Flash photography
There are many more, but these are just a few!
So what to do with this?
I’d say research. Using HASHTAGS — check them out, and see what comes up!
You may want to search things like #lightandairyphotography, #darkandmoody, #naturallightphotography, #offcameraflash, #lookslikefilmweddings, just to help you get a sense. Visiting Pinterest, specifically those boards your photographer sets up can help too!
You may want to ask your photographer do they identify with any of these, or at least see if you can see that in their work. Look for those things to be consistently represented in the photos your photographer posts on their website, social media channels, and any full galleries they share with you.
You’ll find that some photographers can describe their work pretty well (and if you’re wondering, here’s how I would describe my work).
Note that NONE of the above listed items are better than the other, but there IS a "best for YOU."
My suggestion is: really have a look at what's out there and try to see what your eye's drawn to.
Style’s just one consideration when picking your Wedding Photographer
A photographer's style of taking and editing photos is just ONE thing you'll want to consider when selecting a media team for your Engagement Session and Wedding -- things like how experienced they are, how they handle contracts, the entire customer service experience and many more are equally important.
